Personal Safety Tips – Street Smarts and Snatch Theft Preventive Tips
By Megan Chong
Some Useful Tips For Street Safety, Anti-Snatch Thefts:
1. Avoid carrying excess cash and displaying it in public. Bring enough for your purpose.
2. Use a purse or wallet instead of a BIG BAG.
3. Always stay alert, you should constantly aware of your surroundings and anyone acting suspiciously. When you are out in public, try to avoid doing things that will distract you, such as using your mobile phone or rummaging in your bag. This can leave your vulnerable, as your attention isn’t focused on what’s going on around you.
4. Walk against the flow of traffic so that you can be fully aware of any abnormal traffic flow especially motor-cyclists with abnormal speed.
5. When walking on the street, make sure your bag is on the inside. Don’t sling bag across the body because any attempt to snatch the bag will be seriously dragged along and incurred more injuries.
6. Show Positive Body Language
Pickpockets Choose Their Victims
Most thieves want to avoid trouble and will spend time evaluating a potential victim. They prefer to target somebody who is alone, distracted, timid or drunk, because he will be easy to surprise and unwilling or unable to fight back. They may also evaluate a person’s facial expression and body language to detect how likely it is that he will fight back.
Knowing this, you can use your body language to convey a different message:
- WALK CONFIDENTLY – Don’t rush, but don’t amble. Adopt a steady stride, with your head high and your shoulder back.
- STAY ALERT – Don’t look at the ground as you walk, but look and listen to what is going on around you all the time. If someone bumps into you or ask you for the time or a light, be aware that this may be a trick to distract you while somebody else picks your pocket.
- BE PREPARED - Try not to carry anything and keep both hands out of your pockets – ready to defend yourself against an unexpected attack.
- KNOW YOUR ROUTE – Plan your journey in advance so that you look confident and are sure of where you’re going.
7. If your bag is being snatched, just LET GO to avoid injury (refer to my earlier post on my personal experience)
8. If you are a snatch-theft victim, be vocal. Attract attention and take note of the assailant’s appearance, vehicle model, licence plate number, etc.
9. If your wallet or purse has been taken, immediately lodge a police report and inform your bank and credit card company to have your ATM card and credit cards canceled.
